| Notes for Elizabeth |
She appears to have been fairly strong
willed for her time. Elizabeth was one of the executors for
her husband Thomas Black's estate as recorded in the
Lincoln County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions.121
On 21 May 1797, the same day as her marriage to Morris Cox,
she gifted the Broad River plantation to her son-in-law,
Ambrose Cobb (husband of Rachel Black).100
On 11 October 1800 a deed between Morris Cox (Elizabeth's
second husband) and Ephraim Black (her eldest son) released
Elizabeth of all her dower rights. This deed states in its
text that Thomas had died "on or about 15th day of March
1779". It also states that Thomas died possessing two
tracts of land on Indian Creek and a larger tract of land
in what became Rutherford County. This larger tract
consisted of 563 acres on both sides of the Broad
River.7
