| Notes for Elsey E. Black | |||||||||||||||||||
| Elsey enlisted on 11 Sep 1864 at age 18 in
Company H, 34th NC Infantry, CSA. He deserted 18 March
1865.26 Elsey
built the Black house which is still standing. Nearby is
the Black Family Cemetery. My grandpa [Ernest Sellers, Elsey's
grandson, born 1894] remembered going there as a boy; even
though his grandmother Mary Byrd had died in 188033, he could remember
that Elsey would sit on the front porch and say "Mary, my
Mary" over and over again. After Mary's death in childbirth
her sister Roxanna came to help raise the 8 remaining
children, aged 2 through 13. 48, ED 85, SD 3, Page 6, dwelling 56,
family 60 Elsey raised sheep which roamed all over the green pastures (mostly overgrown now). The spring is still there, although the spring house is not. The rock beside the spring bears the imprint of many feet. The house is interesting in that the two upstairs rooms were not connecting. There was one side for boys and one for girls; separate stairways led to each. Elsey along with his brother Jacob were administrators for their father's estate.318 Read more on the Black family. |
