| Notes for Aubra Lee Brown |
Aubra's mother died in childbirth when
Aubra was thirteen. She and her three younger brothers
(including Bill, the newborn) went to live with their
grandparents and her aunts Clemmie and Emma.50, ED 53, SD 91, Sheet 2-A, dwelling
5, family 6 It was believed their father could
not care for them, being both deaf and a man. In actuality
Aubra did all the work.
Clemmie and Grandma Susan were opposed to her going to
college and eventually marrying because she was free
"help". I'm sure they only accepted her teaching school
because it brought some money in, but it resulted in her
meeting and marrying Ernest. The custom at the time was for
the families of schoolchildren to give room and board to
teachers a week or two at a time. Ernest was the oldest of
twelve, and was still living at home when Aubra came to
stay. Because of Clemmie and Susan's opposition they
decided to elope. She had bought a new hat to get married
in but Clemmie found it and asked to borrow it. Rather than
risk discovery, Aubra consented and as a result she was
married in no hat at all.
