| In 1771, he purchased 350 acres in Tryon
County253. He
served as a Justice on the Tryon Court of Pleas and Quarter
Sessions from 1772- 1779.253 In 1779 Tryon County
was abolished and became Lincoln and Rutherford
Counties In 1774 he applied for and received "a licence to keep an Ordinary at his dwelling house".253 In 1775 he was charged with extortion in "the King vs. Thos Espey". The jury found him not guilty.253 Also in 1775, he and James Espey were sued by William Armstrong. The jury found for the plaintiff, and awarded him 16 pounds, 14 shillings, and 5 pence, plus costs.253 In that same term he sued Thomas Campbell and won 5 pounds, 7 shillings, and 8 pence plus costs.253 In 1778 he sued George Trout and won 1 pence plus costs.253 He served as a tax collector in 1778, and as coroner in 1779.253 |
