| Notes for Ben Hartgrove |
He was a stone or brick mason. He appeared
many times in the court records of Mecklenburg County
usually for jury duty, but also once to have an apprentice
bound to him to "learn the secrets of the stone mason's
trade". He was also called upon as a kind of deputy
sheriff, and was once asked to head a committee to assess
and repair the county jail. He owned 200 acres on the east
side of the Catawba at Tuckaseegee Ford.121
