Minnie was deaf from birth.40 (She had a twin brother Willie, who could hear, but he was always frail and died at age seven.) She attended the Governor Morehead School for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind from 1872 - 1881. She died due to childbirth complications about a month after her son Bill was born.

Supposedly the night that she died she suddenly started signing "beautiful, beautiful" and died a few hours later.405
