Notes for William Walker Hartgrove
He served in the Civil War. He appears to have been named for his uncle-in-law, William Walker, who was married to Benjamin Hartgrove's sister Sarah. According to the 1880 census he was a carpenter.

Military
He served with the 11th Regiment, Co. E of the North Carolina Troops of the CSA. He was wounded at White Hall on 16 December 1862, wounded in the left thigh at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863, and was seriously wounded in the neck at Cold Harbor, VA June 1-3, 1864. He enlisted as a private, and was promoted to corporal on January 22 1863, and to sergeant in September-October 1864. He was paroled at Appomatox on 9 April 1865.
