| Notes for John Long |
In November of 1776, he enlisted as an
ensign in the 9th Continental Regiment of Foot in the
Revolutionary War. According to one of his heir's
application for a land grant, he served for three
years.297 He
was awarded a military land warrant (No. 398) for 1097
acres, but it was not received until 4 August 1820, after
his death.297
Notice how scrupulously fair he is in his will105. He makes sure the one
daughter gets extra to make up for a past injustice; and he
actually sets free a slave and her young son and gives her
land. He didn't set free the child she was pregnant with,
though. It makes me wonder if John was the father of Bob,
the boy he set free. |
