| Notes for William McElwee {III} |
He served in the Revolutionary War and fought at the battle of King's Mountain
(which was fought just a few miles from his home) and
appears as a soldier in the DAR Patriot Index.10 His tombstone says he was
a Lieutenant in Sumter's command,28 however there is at present no other evidence to support this claim.
According to Col. Pinkney
McElwee: "He was of stout build and medium stature with
dark blond hair and blue eyes and was a trifle taller than
his brother James. In his later years he had a full head of
snow-white hair." |
