until he was in his late 40s. When he did marry, it was a
woman 25 years his junior.
He served in the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in
Company C, 37th NC Infantry, CSA on 20 Sept 1864. He was
discharged due to disability on 5 Mar 1865.26 (He suffered from chronic
rheumatism - he was 45 years old, after all.)
