| In 1877 he became the first Bishop of Peoria. He was heavily involved in the founding of the Catholic University of America which opened it's doors in 1889. He was paralyzed in 1905, and in 1908 resigned as Bishop of Peoria. He became Archbishop of Scitopolis in 1909. He lived at the Diocesan Chancery, part of St. Mary's Cathedral at 607 N. Madison Ave, Peoria, Illinois, near his brother Leonard Spalding and his sister, Mary and her husband Frank Slevin.292A nearby street is called Spalding Ave in his honor.
