According to her granddaughter Jane Howell, she had had jet-black hair which turned pure white as she aged. Jane believed her to be of Spanish descent, although census records indicate her parents were born in England.¹⁸¹^,182^,183

She moved to Los Angeles, California sometime in the 1920s, where she owned a house with her daughter Ella. Her house was worth $6,000.³⁵²
