| Notes for Obediah Kirby | ||||||||||||||||
| Obediah and his whole family were Quakers
who attended Meeting at the South River Meeting
House.436, p.
295 According to the biography of his grandson Henry Kirby, he emigrated from Scotland to America "early in life."432 However, the records of the South River Monthly Meeting that his parents attended imply that he was born in Halifax County, Virginia. He was first "under care of" the Meeting, and then "disowned" for owning slaves.436, p. 295 He apparently owned land in Tennessee. In his will, he directed that those lands be sold to provide for the education of his children who were not yet of age when he died.442 He did own at least one slave in his lifetime, a man named Will whom he "left" to his wife in his will.442 Read more about the Kirby family. |
