Will of Samuel Espy
dated 26 December 1838

In the name of God amain this twenty-sixth day of December one thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight I Samuel Espey of the county of Lincoln and state of North Carolina being in perfect mind and memory at this time thanks be to God for his merceys to me forever calling to mind the mortality of my Boddy and the uncertainty of Death knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Dye I do make and ordain this my Last will and testament in the folowing maner

I do first of all Recommend my Sole to the Almity God that give it to me and my Boddy to be decently birried.

Second all my Just debts to be paid out of my Estate and

third I will and bequeth to my well Beloved Wife Mary the House that we now live in and also my servant Jordan to be hers her life time and under the controle of my son Joseph while she lives and after her Death he is to be sold and the money equally divided amongst the Whole of my Children. She also is to have two cows and calvs and a good Bed and furniture to be at her disposal also Plantation that we now live on is not to be sold in her life time but at her Death it is to be sold and equally divided amongs all my Children.

forth I will and be queth to my Daughter Marthy Hugins ten dollars.

fifth I do also will and be queath to Mary my Daughter Mary Oats ten dollars

and I also will to my Daughter Elizabeth Oats ten dollars

I also will and bequeath to my son John Espey ten dollars.

I also will and bequeth to my son Thomas Espey ten dollars.

I also will and bequeth to my son Samuel Espeys Heirs ten dollars which I paid for the said Samuel Espeys widow since he dyed.

I also will and bequeth to my son Robert Espey fifty dollars.

I also will and bequeth to my son Joseph Espey ten dollars.

I also will and bequeth to my daughter Margaret Lackey fifty dollars.

I also intend all my stock horses cattle sheep + hogs also my waggons and farming tools house hold and kitchen furniture that is not spacifyed in my this my last will and testament all to be sold. also a tract of land on the waters of the parsimmon Joining Fuenwider + Rankins lands. It I also intend to be sold and if to be found and after all my Just debts is paid to be Equaly and all the Children paid their parts be fore mentioned in this my last will and testament the balence to be equally Divided amongst all my Children be the Same more or less.
